"An evening at the Daybreak Shelter in Joliet is quite a rewarding experience. For 40+ years Lemont United Methodist Church (LUMC) has been serving dinners at the shelter on the first Wednesday of each month. Our journey starts from the church with Vickie and Mark O. at the helm at 6:00 p.m. sharp, driving directly to the shelter where we start setting up the casseroles, distributing the salad into bowls, pouring the juice and milk, and buttering the bread.
Vickie and Mark do a wonderful job of coordinating this night, making sure we have enough to feed anywhere from 50 to 90 people.
And might I add that Mark does a wonderful job washing the dishes when it's all over, at about 7:30 to 8 p.m. Boy it's great not to have to do dishes!
This is also made possible by the generous food donations contributed by our congregation each month. Some ladies in our congregation make Chicken Casseroles each month. Some donate salad, salad dressing, juice, milk, bread, fruit, and deserts. It is not without the help of the congregation that this is such a success each month.
We thank all those who have participated over the years, and we encourage those who may have thought about it to get involved.
