Shearing the Shepherd

Worship this Sunday, May 28, 2023, is going to be busy. It is Pentecost Sunday which celebrates the birth of the Church and outpouring of the Holy Spirit (remember to wear red to church on Sunday). It is Memorial Day weekend, in honor of those who served and died for our country. The commissioning of our members going to Red Bird Mission. And finally, we are going to select my next haircut. It will be a wonderful time of worship!

The term pastor is from the Latin term for shepherd. If you have been around Christianity for a while, you can see the connection. Jesus is the Good Shepherd. As a pastor I am in the shepherding business. I am a shepherd of sorts and so I decided to call this fundraiser Shearing the Shepherd.

Except for a trim, I have not cut my hair since March 2020. In the beginning, it was because I could not leave my house to get a haircut. Later, I decided not to cut my hair while there was a health emergency concerning Covid 19 and in solidarity with those who were sick. Although Covid has not been eradicated, the public health emergency has passed. It is now time to cut my hair!

Here’s how it works: YOU are selecting my next haircut. For $10 a vote, you can vote as many times as you’d like, you will decide my hairstyle. All proceeds will help fund our churches’ Red Bird Mission Trip.

Here are your options:

  1. Bald
  2. Mohawk
  3. Miss Becky’s Choice
  4. Pastor Tim’s Choice
  5. This is a silly contest but since I love God and Red Bird Mission, I’ll participate.

Ø Each vote is $10. Vote as many times as you’d like.

Ø Cast your ballot on Sundays, May 28 and June 4 at church. Envelopes and the ballot box are located at the back of the sanctuary. Envelopes, with the ballot on the front, can be filled out and money placed inside.

Ø All votes need to be submitted to LUMC no later than Sunday, June 4, 2023, following worship.

On Sunday, June 11, I will arrive at church with my new hairstyle.

I hope you participate. I think letting you choose my haircut will be fun! And I am glad we can do this to the glory of God! I plan to donate my hair to Locks for Love. Blessings to you all.

Pastor Tim

Some information about Red Bird Mission

Red Bird Mission was founded in 1921 in the southeastern corner of Kentucky to provide education and Christian evangelism ministries to residents of the area. The Mission was started by the Evangelical Church on a small piece of property, at the confluence of Cow Fork and the Red Bird River. (This information is from the Red Bird Mission website. To learn more, go to http://rbmission.org/).

Lemont United Methodist Church has been engaged with Red Bird Mission for years. Unfortunately, we were unable to make the trip in 2020 due to Covid. A group from our church are traveling to Eastern Kentucky to do mission work at Red Bird. They will be going Sunday, June 4 to Friday, June 9, 2023.
